Daniel Ridgway Knight
was born in Pennsylvania where he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of
Fine Arts under Thomas Eakins and Mary Cassett. In 1861 he moved to Paris
to study at the L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Discouraged by the Civil War from
returning to America, he remained in Paris for the rest
of his life. His speciality was peasant girls in a state of reverie, as
