PHEASANT COCK AND HEN WITH FLY AGARIC
October 1929

Archibald Thorburn, Pheasant Cock and Hen with Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) in a Woodland Setting. Fine Art Print after the remastered original watercolour image.
Mouse-over for close-up.  Mouse-wheel to zoom

Autumn and a cock pheasant struts before his mate foolishly believing himself to be monarch of all he surveys. Two fly agaric (amanita muscaria) fungus brighten the woodland floor.

Another of Thorburn's major works works. Unfortunately, the original, as with all his watercolours, has suffered more than most from irreversible time damage over the past 90 years. In this case not only the typical loss of blues and greens but a curious over-saturation of the reds in the background foliage that is not matched by any similar change to the cock bird's plumage. As a result the original watercolour is now a startlingly unbalanced image with the background overwhelming the subject.. This print is taken from the re-mastered original watercolour image in which all the colour changes and fading, minor faults and time damage have been reversed and corrected to reveal the image as would have been seen when first painted by Thorburn in October 1929.
