SNIPE IN WINTER
Dated 1901

Archibald Thorburn, Snipe in Winter, 1901. A solitary Snipe stands by a clump of rushes, on a bank covered with a sprinkling of snow, a shallow pool in the foreground.
Mouse-over for close-up.  Mouse-wheel to zoom

A typical Thorburn rendition of British wildlife. A snipe shelters from the wind behind some tall sedges or rushes growing on a low bank besides a shallow pool.  A light dusting of snow covers the ground.

The original watercolour has suffered some quite dramatic tonal changes, resulting in bright, reddish rushes and some overly blue shadow (normal for watercolours of the period). Additionally, the paper now exhibits a pronounced beige colour cast that causes the original image to lose much of its depth. These colour faults have been corrected and some minor splashes, spills and general surface grime cleaned off.  What we now see is a beautifully harmonious colour pallet with the bird clearly visible within naturalistic surroundings.
