BIRDS OF AMERICA
JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785 - 1851) PLATE
372 - Engraved by R. HAVELL
Mouse-over for close-up. Mouse-wheel to zoom
COMMON BUZZARD - Buteo vulgaris.
Swooping down upon
MARSH HARE - Lepus palustris.
IMAGE REF: AUD035
The original water-colour has no background,
it just shows the buzzard, the hare and an agama lizard (that
found its way into Plate 386, the
White Heron) on an otherwise blank
sheet. It is interesting to note that the added background
depicts a saw mill which was Audubon's primary occupation and
one which eventually bankrupted him. Is the print background derived from
sketch of his own ill-fated venture?
