PLATE 376 - Engraved by R. HAVELL

GREAT  CINEREOUS OWL

CLOSE-UP - John James Audubon's GREAT CINEREOUS OWL, Birds of America, Havell Edition - Strix cinerea - Restored Print

GREAT CINEREOUS OWL  - Strix cinerea
(Now: GREAT GREY OWL - Strix nebulosa)

Surviving original prints of the Great Cinereous Owl show the bird in a range of colours ranging from almost colourless to a startlingly bright reddish-brown. The colour adopted for this print has been taken from a typical living specimen. Audubon's original watercolour exhibits a distinctly brown hue, believed to be a direct result of chemical changes to the original pigments, the toning of the paper and the decomposition of the organic glazes used by both Audubon and Havell.
