 AMERICAN MAGPIE - Corvus pica
Now:
Black-billed or Common Magpie - Pica pica

Audubon had not coloured the eyes of the water-colour sketch that he delivered to Havell. However, his instructions must have been that they were to be coloured dark brown as is made clear in the description Audubon gives in his accompanying text. If the instruction to colour the eyes ever was given it was not carried out by Havell's colourists as all located copies of this print show the eyes uncoloured. This omission is corrected above with eye colour reinstated in accordance with Audubon's instructions. The result is a pair of birds that, rather than looking like a pair of poorly executed taxidermist specimens, appear alive, alert and ready to fly off the page.
