The surviving original watercolour,
painted by Audubon, is little more than a quick sketch whose colours
have since faded or changed beyond recognition, the result of Audubon's use of
low cost organic dyes and inks. It is amazing how Robert Havell was able
to take this very rough painting, that provided little more than the
general composition and character of the birds and from it produce a
beautifully detailed and accurate rendering of the birds, the flowers
and the foliage. Yet, as always, Audubon takes all the credit !
