WAMPUM SNAKE AND RED LILY

Mark Catesby, Wampum Snake and Red Lily, Natural History of Carolina, Florida and The Bahama Islands - Plate 58 (1731)
Mouse-over for close-up.  Mouse-wheel to zoom

WAMPUM, BLUE, KING OR CHAIN SNAKE - Anguis e caeruluo et albo varius
(None of these is a completely true fit for this image)

AND CAROLINA (RED)  LILY - Lilium carolinianum

The original prints are missing the right quarter of the lily corm simply because Catesby
ran out of room on the copper plate. The missing part has been reconstructed with close
reference to the original watercolour.  The snake appears to be an amalgam of the above
species together with a liberal helping of Catesby's imagination.  A lovely image nonetheless.

This plate also appears in the images only publication:
Piscium, serpentum, insectorum, aliorumque nonnullorum animalium nec non platarum quarundum imagines
posthumously published in Germany by Georg Wolfgang Knorr, 1777
