ULTRA CLOSE-UPS - John Curtis, British Entomology, Plate 96 - Vanessa antiope (Camberwell Beauty)

VANESSA ANTIOPE - CAMBERWELL BEAUTY
(Now:
Nymphalis antiopa)
the caterpillar on
BASKET OSIER - Salix forbyana
IMAGE REF: CRT096
PAGE TEXT: "... like the seeds of some vegetables, ..."

It is interesting to note that Curtis believed that this butterfly was capable of existing as an egg
for years, if not decades, unaware that it was a very occasional migrant from Scandinavia and
Mainland Europe. The caterpillar is a direct, honest copy of Jacob Kübner's work.
