ATHENE FORTIS and ATHENE STRENUA - Two speicies probably invented by John and Elizabeth Gould for John Gould's A Synopsis of Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands. (1837-38)

ATHENE (?) FORTIS & ATHENE (?) STRENUA

 

Zoological Catalogue of Australia (1997) notes that neither of these birds has been properly identified and the original specimens are lost, inviting the conclusion that the Goulds invented these two species.
