Print. Maria Sibylla Merian, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, Plate 53. Medlar with Morpho menelaus

PLATE LIII (53)
Wild Medlar Tree (?)  with Morpho menelaus

In spite of considerable research we have not been able positively to identify
the botanical element which seems to be a combination of different leaves and fruit

IMAGE REF: MER011

As with all early 18th Century hand-coloured engravings, some minor blocking-out
of the engraved lines by the applied colour is evident. This has been left in
place so as to preserve the original character of the print.
