Print. Maria Sibylla Merian, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, Plate 9. Pomegranate (Punica granatum().

PLATE IX (9)
Pomegranate - Punica granatum
with caterpillar of Eumorpha faciata

The above butterfly colours are from the original watercolour after
allowances have been made for fading and colour changes. However,
living specimens vary widely and by request we have included a
version of the print with the more brightly coloured local variant

IMAGE REF: MER012

As with all early 18th Century hand-coloured engravings, some minor blocking-out
of the engraved lines by the applied colour is evident. This has been left in
place so as to preserve the original character of the print.
