TEMMINCK'S CLASSIFICATION OF BIRDS

Conrad Jacob Temminck's Classification of Birds. George Smith, Liverpool. c1820

CLASSIFICATION OF BIRDS INTO 16 ORDERS, circa 1820.

This important and interesting chart has been sourced from a very rare, if not unique survival printed on very thin and now extremely fragile paper. It was probably included within the above publication for the English market. It was discovered folded-up within a library volume from the estate of Thomas H. T. Hopkins (1833 - 1885), fellow of Magdelen College, Oxford. No other copy is known to exist.

There is a hand-written correction to Order III, Genus 29.  "Troglodites" is faintly amended in pencil to read:  "Troglodytes". This is just about visible in the "mouse-over" close-up.

Coenraad Jacob Temminck (Dutch spelling) was director of the Natural History Museum at Leiden from 1820 and an international member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His life-work was the reclassification of birds, a difficult task at a time when all life was believed to have been created by a divine entity, the concept of species evolution being entirely unknown.
